SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING
-
This song is about Bernie Taupin's teen years going to British dance clubs, where fights were common. Many of Taupin's songs were written to relate to Elton's life, but not this one - it's unlikely that Elton would be fighting in a club.
THE BITCH IS BACK
-
Elton is the "Bitch". One day when he was in a foul mood, complaining about anything and everything, Bernie Taupin's wife, Maxine, saw him and said "Uh oh, the bitch is back."
CROCODILE ROCK
-
This was the first of many #1 singles by Elton John in the U.S. His first in the UK came in 1976 with Kiki Dee ("Don't Go Breaking My Heart"). His first solo #1 in the UK was "Sacrifice" in 1990.
I’M STILL STANDING
-
The video went over very well on MTV, which helped propel the song up the charts and introduce Elton to a younger audience. With lots of scantily clad and painted people, the colorful video made this Elton's first MTV hit, and showed he was ready to embrace the format, something not every established star was willing to do.
BENNIE & THE JETS
-
Elton's producer Gus Dudgeon wanted a live feel on this recording, so he mixed in crowd noise from a show Elton played in 1972 at Royal Festival Hall. He also included a series of whistles from a live concert in Vancouver B.C., and added hand claps and various shouts.
FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEEDING
-
Since this is about 11 minutes long, it was not released as a single. It became a very popular song on FM radio, partly because it wasn't played very often, and also because it gave DJs a chance to take a bathroom break or smoke a cigarette.
DANIEL
-
This was written and recorded the same day. Taupin wrote the lyrics one morning at the recording studio and brought them downstairs to Elton, who put music to it and recorded with the band that day.
PHILIDELPHIA FREEDOM
-
On the single, it said this song was dedicated to "B.J.K." (Billie Jean King) and "The Soulful Sounds Of Philadelphia."
ALL THE YOUNG GIRLS LOVE ALICE
-
This is a look into the gay lifestyle of England through the eyes and lyrics of Bernie Taupin, Elton's songwriting partner. He made up the tragic story of a young lesbian who died in the streets.
PINBALL WIZARD
-
This version was released as a single in 1975 in the US, and in 1976 in the UK, where it reached number 7. John's version uses a piano as the song's centerpiece in place of the acoustic guitar in the original (in the film, "Tommy", John's character is shown playing his pinball machine via a small piano keyboard), and features additional lyrics specially written by Pete Townshend for the movie version, as well as a subtle inclusion of The Who's 1960's hit, "I Can't Explain"!
I DON’T WANNA GO ON WITH YOU LIKE THAT
-
The song has a lot of significance for Elton not so much for its subject matter, but for where it fits on his timeline. He was doing copious amounts of cocaine at the time, and in his words, "headed for the abyss." As his current hit, he performed the song at many concerts; Elton says that he always left his personal life behind when he faced an audience, but had to deal with his demons as soon as he left the stage.
ROCKET MAN
-
This was Elton's biggest hit to that point, out-charting his first Top-10 entry, "Your Song."
